Overview

“The underworld” is the side of society that operates outside of the bounds of the law, either fragrantly or partially, engaging in a variety of crimes. This can range from crimes such as theft, smuggling and corruption, to espionage, conspiracy, kidnapping and murder. While underworld trades can encompass a variety of skills, the most commonly used ones are Thievery, Stealth, Intimidation and Deception.

Some of those who live in the underworld as a lifestyle are classed as Rogues. Others, like Investigators, may be immersed in the underworld to obtain information and catch (the worst) criminals.

Most towns and cities have varying levels of organised crime, where criminals band together to cooperate and ensure some level of security. Gangs and mafias are often lead by one or few bosses and are highly territorial - engaging in violence and intimidation to protect their turf. Thieves’ Guilds usually have more diffuse power, and are built on a constitution or code of honour/conduct that designates the rules of membership.

A much rarer but more feared type of underworld alliance is the Assassin’s Guild. There have been various efforts to root out and destroy these throughout history. They seem to thrive more during times of instability and the decentralisation of power.
